Acrylic.. is that like Plexiglas?

Plexiglas or Plex as it's more commonly known is a trade mark but Acrylic is the same material which is either cast or extruded into sheet form with color added. Sign companies have been using acrylic for indoor and outdoor signs since the product was first made back in the early 50's and it really has not changed very much since then. For making letters we extrude acrylic into sheets with many colors that are not available on the open market. We make our acrylic sheet at the Iowa plant and ship it to many of our other plants around the country where it is cut with lasers into letters and logos. Laser cutting of acrylic sheet leaves a polished look to the cut edge on all our colors except Metallic Gold and Metallic Silver which tends to leave a decorative smoked edge.

Versatile:

Because our Acrylic letters are cut with precision on computer guided laser machines it can be cut into virtually any font style, shape or even logo. Even so there are limitations due to the heat generated by the laser, small letters less than 1" in height are not possible and very large letters may not fit on a standard sheet. Nevertheless, laser cut acrylic letters have the lowest cost for letters less than 3/8" in thickness. Thicker letters, 1/2" to 1" thick are available but stop becoming economical. At that point, for outdoor letters it is better to look at Vacuum formed letters or Injection Molded Letters which have much deeper returns at lower cost than acrylic.

Self Install:

Acrylic letters come with a variety of hardware options that allow for very simple installation. For outdoor use most professional installers will choose the stud mount. By the way, when we say stud we are not referring to the studs in your wall. A stud is a length of threaded rod that screws into the back of the letter and anchors it to the wall. For indoor use, double face tape is often sufficient for drywall applications. At the bottom of this page is a full list of the hardware options available and their usage. We also have videos of letter installation procedures for various mounts which cover most of our letter types. Installation Videos.

For stud, combo or Combo-all type mounts, a drilling pattern is essential for perfect alignment and can be ordered during the checkout process. Drilling installation pattern

For indoor mounting, a full size stencil pattern can be useful for perfect alignment and can be ordered during the checkout process. Stencil installation pattern

Usage:
Whether indoors or outdoors, Acrylic letters are a good choice as long as you do not want letters with a lot of edge thickness. For larger letters over 12" tall you should also consider that the thinner acrylic 1/8" and 3/16" are not very strong and will fail under impact conditions. Also for thinner letters stay away from thin or curly fonts which tend to get easily broken. Also review the page here which lists all the choices for interior letters. For outdoor use review the page here for Outdoor Building Letters

We should also discuss colors - THIS IS BIG

While sheet colors are the standard and cheapest option there are drawbacks. Sheet colors are for the most part very glossy and can have that instantly recognizable "plastic" look. There are also a limited amount of colors available so if you want something else you simply have to have the painted option which adds 30%. The good news is that acrylic takes paint very well and the paint adds UV protection as well. With paint, the edge and face are painted and form a single color which is not always the case with sheet colors. Painting allows for a gloss level that ranges from full gloss to full matte.

Painting does not limit you to the paint pallet on our website. For a $20 per color mixing fee we can paint your letters in millions of shades! Want a Sherwin Williams, Behr, pantone, PPG or other major paint company color? No problem! To go one step further than that we have the ability to mask and paint multiple colors on a single surface or we can use advanced processes to print color directly onto an acrylic surface just like your inkjet printer, AND the result is color and weather fast! So acrylic truly is one of the most versatile products we have..

Aligns the display output(below) either left, right or center justified. This image is passed along in your order. Alignment requires 2 or more lines of text. TIP: You can also indent text by using spaces before and after the text to move the line text to the left or right.

Sets a background to the preview so that you can judge the text color against a background color. Backgrounds are not provided in the order. All letters come as individual letters or numbers. We do not make the sign, we help you to make your sign.

Cut letters can be made in almost any size including fractions and lowercase and punctuation. Letter sizes are based on the inch and incur a price change when fractional as in 3-1/2 inch would be priced at the 4" cost so try not to go over by small amounts because even 1/8 over any inch mark will put you to the next price inch.

The depth of a vacuum formed letter is determined by the height of the letter. Larger letters have greater depth than smaller ones. The depth shown is for information only. It cannot be changed.

This product is size and font dependent. Small sizes under 2 inches can only be made in block fonts and all capitals whereas most larger sizes can be made in any font regardless of if it's on our list. If you have your own font or your own artwork then we can accommodate that and there is usually no price difference. Send artwork in illustrator vector outlines to sales@signlettersource.com and include as much details about size, thickness, finish, mounts etc for a quick custom quote.

Type in the letters, numbers and punctuation, exactly as you want it to read when you make your sign. For multiple line signs, there are 3 other lines that will become available. What you type is what you will get. If lower case letters typed and the size is too small or lower case is not available in the chosen font, those letters will automatically convert to upper case and should convert back again when you change the height or size to something that has availability. What you type here will display in the preview area to the left along with correct real world dimensions. All letters are sent to you as individual letters and numbers, not as a ready made sign.

If you only want a series of numbers or numbers and letters for doors, then type them all in on line 1. Separate with a space but do not add comma's There is no need to add one number for each line.

If you want larger leading capitals in a phrase then you have to add the larger caps on a separate line.

Cut letters can be finished in a variety of ways. Please refer to the choices at the bottom of this page. Some finishes can only be done on certain sizes or thickness of letters. Painted finishes can be the ones on our picker or for a small fee can be any pantone, sherwin Williams or PPG color.

Painted letters can be ordered in 4 different gloss levels. Standard colors are not painted and are always high gloss.

Cut letters can be configured in various ways but they are dependent on the finish of the letters and the heights and fonts also. We try to present the choices available for the choices you have made elsewhere in this ordering page.

The factory recommends 2" of stud in the wall plus the amount of wall standoff desired, if any. In most cases it is best to leave this option at factory set unless you know you want longer studs for a special purpose installation

Wall standoff refers to how far you want the back of the letters to be from the surface you are mounting them on. The factory will calculate the correct stud length and if choosing this option then it's best to leave the stud length at factory set.

The profile of a letter or number is how you will see it when you view it edge on as a cross section. A bevel face profile will have a prismatic look like a roof, rising steeply from the edge to the center of the letter stroke. A Round profile will have a half moon face that is rounded from edge to edge. A flat face profile will have slightly rounded corners due to the molding process and then be flat from edge to edge.

Install patterns are priced based on the total amount of letters ordered. The price covers the entire order and the type of pattern sent varies on the type of mount chosen. If ordered, a drilling pattern is sent with all stud type letters, a stencil pattern for all letters where glue or tape is used. A Spacing guide is sent for all molded letters that are not using stud type mounts.
