Mounting Hardware

no mount option

The no-mount option is for when you want to glue letters directly to a flat surface using some kind of adhesive such as silicon caulk or liquid nails. The problem with this type of installation is that glue tends to squeeze out the edges and it can get very messy. Also, until your glue sets the letters can move around and for large letters that means you need to use long strips of masking tape to hold them in place.

double face tape option

Double sided tape can only be applied to letters up to 24" in height. If using this option then always use a liquid silicon caulk as well to protect the letters in case the tape should fail

stud mount option

This is the default stud mount. This option will have blocks glued to the backs of the letters that create a natural surface standoff of about 3/8" which can be enhanced by choosing a standoff length in the forms options. The blocks are drilled and tapped to accept studs(threaded rods) that get glued into holes drilled in the mounting surface. A drill mounting pattern is required.

pad mount option

Plastic pad extending beyond back of letter, typical with plastic letters, install product direct to wall without having to drill any holes. Installed with use of split stencil or spacing guide. Silicone is a common adhesive to hold such letters.

combo mount option

The combo or combination mount differs from the combination all mount in that it only has stud THROUGH pads on the tops of the letters and standard PAD mounts on the bottoms. This mount is useful where you want to drill as few holes as possible and still have mounting rods(studs) in the wall. Installed by drilling holes for the stud through pad and adhering non stud pads directly to mounting surface. A drill mounting pattern is required.

combination all mount option

The combination all mount is stud through pad on all points. This gives you adjustability on every stud and is useful for irregular surfaces such as corrugated metal buildings, lap siding, stone walls or anywhere you want a standoff form the wall that is adjustable during installation. A drill mounting pattern is required

Edge Colors

Acrylic edge colors

All other colors would be painted which adds 30% to the price.

Mounting Patterns

drilling pattern for stud mounted letters

Full size Drilling patterns are tracing of letters done by hand at the factory. The letters, with studs screwed into the back or into blocks, are then punched through the paper to show the exact location of the studs. Once taped onto a wall, the hole locations are then drilled and filled with adhesive for any installation using a threaded stud. $3.25 per letter.

pattern for pad and tape mounted letters

A pounce pattern is an outline drawing of letters ordered, full size, made on a plotter with a pounce tool instead of a pen. This tool punches small holes into the paper, following the exact outline of the letters. The installer will then tape this drawing on the wall and "dust" the surface with chalk. The chalk will create a "dusting outline" of the letters on the wall that is then used as a guide for installing plain or pad mounted letters. $3.25 per letter.

pattern for pad and tape mounted letters

Stencil is a full size cutout of smaller letters. This pattern cannot be ordered for Cast or Molded products. Guide for installing plain, pad or double face tape letters. Guide is taped to wall, letter set inside cutout, adhered to wall. $60 FOR UP TO 100 CHARACTERS. (We determine if Stencil or Split Stencil is best for your order.)

pattern for pad and tape mounted letters

This pattern cannot be ordered for Cast or Molded products. Split Stencil is a partial cutout of bottom portion of the letters above the baseline, plus 2" below the baseline that provides a perfect way to install plain, pad or double face tape flat cut out letters. This split stencil is generated using the same file that we use to produce your letters. $60 FOR UP TO 100 CHARACTERS. We determine if Stencil or Split Stencil is best for your order.)

pattern for pad and tape mounted letters

A guide for plain, pad or double face tape mounted letters. The letters in a specific copy are spelled out and properly spaced on a long pattern table or computer generated. A narrow (approximately 2") piece of paper contains small hash marks or plotted lower portions of the letters. This guide is then secured to the wall with tape by the installer and provides a visual guide for installing letters. $10 - ANY QUANTITY.

NO MOUNTS: This option is for when you want to provide your own mounts or when you want to glue letters directly to a flat surface using some kind of adhesive such as silicon caulk or liquid nails. The problem with this type of installation is that glue tends to squeeze out the edges and it can get very messy. Also, until your glue sets the letters can move around and for large letters that means you need to use long strips of masking tape to hold them in place.

DOUBLE SIDE TAPE: For mounting indoors on flat non porous surfaces. Double sided tape mount should never be relied on entirely. Always add spots of silicon caulk or construction adhesive between the strips of tape to ensure that the letters will not fall if the tape dries out. If the letters come loose and fall they could break or even hurt someone. If outdoors they may pose a threat of theft. For this reason it is not wise to consider this mount outdoors.

Picture of a letter showing how to mount it away from the wall
STUD MOUNT: Studs, also known as pins, are threaded rods that screw into threaded holes in the backs of the letters. On material less than 3/8" thick, we use a mounting block glued to the back of the letter to accept the threaded stud. This also gives a letter stand-off of about 1/4 to 1/2". The stud is an aluminum threaded rod and can be ordered in various lengths starting at 1".

Mounting is as simple as drilling holes into a wall, drywall, brick masonry, wood, stucco etc; , filling the holes with silicon caulk, liquid nails, epoxy or even mortar, and then pushing one into the other. For this operation a mounting pattern is highly recommended or you will not know where to drill the holes. Studs can also be passed through a substrate to allow for nuts and washers to be attached to the back.

If you are mounting to a real brick wall and do not want to drill into the bricks, select the stud for brick option and we can drill the threaded holes in rows along the backs of the letters that are equal distance apart based on the measurement you choose from the Stud for Brick" option. To get that measurement correct, measure across one brick on the wall where you are placing the letters. The measurement center to center of the mortar gap should be around 2-5/8 inches. See image at left.

And finally, don't overdo the standoff option. Just because you can do something does not mean you should and many novice installers really go overboard with this thinking it gives the letters definition and shadow. In reality it just reveals all that non finished hardware behind the letters and makes it easy for people to steal. Heck, they don't even need to bring a pry bar! Mounting pattern is required.

FLUSH STUDS: Letters have to be at least 3/8" thick to drill and tap the holes but this mount is very secure since it does not rely on a glued block to hold the stud. This mount is best used without wall stand-off which will compromise the purpose of this mount which is to prevent theft. If you want stand-off you can select it also but allow for the stud length which should be 2" in the wall plus the length of the stand-off. Mounting pattern is required. See the section above for mounting to real brick or for more information.

Chemetal is a massive collection of over 200 metal and laminate designs. We offer only the 900 series which is an anodized aluminum face in a variety of colors and textures. Widely used in the high end construction of modern office buildings, Chemetal is .025" thick and is laminated at our facility under high pressure to a variety of Acrylic substrates up to 1/2" thick, using 3M laminating adhesives for a flat and permenant bond. Letters, numbers and logos are then cut using precision CNC equipment that delivers a premium 2 toned effect suitable for use in displays, reception areas and wherever you need to get your message across with style!

For special orders, email us for details along with specific needs including Chemetal color number, letter sizes, letter or logo thickness and font required. We will email you back with an estimate within 24 hours.

Picture of the metal face finishes
As stated earlier, there are over 200 variations of textures and face finishes offered by the Chemetal Company. Many are mind blowing and beautiful patterns and textures. A color ring is available at the Chemetal website. There you can also see images of the many variations offered, from deep red rusts, to geometric patterns, colors and dazzling effects. We can cut anything with a base metal of aluminum, brass or copper but be warned, some of these sheets are hugely expensive and if you want us to special order a laminate sheet it will be about 3-4 weeks out and will incur a purchase and shipping fee to us not less than $400 plus the cost of the letters we cut from it.

A full length video featuring all the Chemetal colors and manufacturing processes is available for viewing on this page in the "About" tab located under the letter preview area. Please be aware that while it is possible to hand craft this material around letter edges, it would be an extreemly lengthy and delicate process and we therefore do not offer this option at this time.
CUSTOM FONTS
Our extensive font list numbers close to 100 but we can only list so many fonts on this website and that is just the tip of the iceberg. With cut letters we are able to cut almost any font or any shape including multi part logos. There are literally tens of thousands of fonts and related options for fonts such as regular, semi bold, demi bold, heavy, condensed, extended and it is beyond the limitations of the technology to include all fonts.

If you have a font you dont see here just ask us. In most cases we either have the font or can get the font but in some cases we will need you to supply either the font or ready to cut vector artwork from files such as those produced in Adobe Illustrator.

If you need a logo cut, send us what you have in email along with all the specifications such as dimension, desired material, finish, thickness etc, and we will get you a quote back, usually the same day.
INSTALLATION TIPS and VIDEO\'S

Please note these video\'s cover many types of letters that may not be applicable to the products on this page.
The correct place to start is where you intend to mount your letters. Visualize how much space your sign will take up, then measure the space. If you are in a city and this is an outdoor sign it is wise to find out if you will need a permit from the city. Some cities have strict rules on signage, how much space they will allow in terms of square feet, the type of sign, how it will be mounted and what it is made of. These are the first steps. The next step is the difficulty factor. Most people do not have man lifting equipment to work at high levels. Ladders may not be safe considering the work to be done. You should determine if the savings you will get by buying the letters and self installing is worth the cost of renting a lift and the hazards involved. If in doubt, stop, get your local yellow pages out and call a professional sign company.

When you buy your letters, numbers and logos directly from a manufacturer or distributor, it is assumed that you will be installing the products yourself. In this regard you are acting as your own sign company with all the benefits and pitfalls that might entail. Essentially, the average DIY handy person can easily install their own sign as long as it is at ground level. Our mounting patterns take all the guesswork out of it but it is essential that you get all your ducks in a row before you decide to buy the letters. While on the subject of sign companies it should be said that many sign companies do not want to install letters unless they have supplied them. It is a warrenty issue for them and it is also a money issue since they make money on the purchase of sign letters for your project. If you intend to have a sign company install, do yourself a favor and let them do the entire job.
